The Barcelona show is an event which the largest mobile phones manufacturer, Nokia, could not miss. It’s presence at the MWC is marked by some new devices as well.   Nokia N78 is a high end multimedia handset that was recently unveiled by the Company. The most important aspects of the new device are its connectivity and quality picture capturing thanks to the 3.2MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a Flash LED. The phone supports WiFi and 3G networks, which makes it possible to enjoy Youtube and Flickr and the A-GPS option.  The phone is equipped with a microSD slot that supports memory cards with a storage of up to 8GB, the internal memory has a volume of 70MB. The phone is expected to be available in the second quarter,2008, at a retail price of 350EUR.  

As it was announced earlier LG Electronics presented at MWC some high-end handsets of the KF series: the KF510, KF600 and KF700.All three are based on one concept: to deliver a regular alphanumeric keypad, and an alternative touch sensitive option for navigation purposes.LG KF510 is a stylish and slim slider phone which is only 10.9mm thick. It boasts a touch sensitive D-pad and a 2.2” display on the front panel. On the rear part it houses a 3MP camera with a Flash Led. The phone supports popular file formats and the FM radio as another option for music lovers. Two colors are available for this model: Stardust Dark Gray or Sunset Red. LG KF510 will start shipment within the first quarter of 2008. LG KF600 made its way from the Asian market to Europe, as it was recently presented in Barcelona. The top feature of this handset is the InteractPad. The phone got replaced its traditional D-pad with a touch screen that interacts with the main screen and displays controls that are related to the running application.   Rumors came true. As many have been speculating on the upcoming N96 model, it finally reached the official presentation. The new handset is a slide form factor device, equipped with a 2.8” display, a 5 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics and 16GB of internal storage. The phone incorporates the gaming keys that were already found previously on Nokia N81 and is powered by Symbian 60, the third edition. The phone is designed to offer the ultimate connectivity level therefore it supports 3G and WiFi connections. The GPS function is also on-board but it is operable only in a combination with the Nokia Maps software. Thanks to a high speed of data transfer there are multiple options to enjoy the possibility to watch TV broadcasts on the go. The phone will be available starting the third quarter, 2008.  

One of the leading manufacturers of mobile devices, Sony Ericsson keeps a steady pace regarding the development of new handsets. The latest novelty revealed by the company is the new Xperia X1 smartphone. The mobile phone is based on Windows Mobile and it features the new XPERIA panel interface which is a new vision of the interactive level that a touch-screen device must provide. The phone boasts a large 3” VGA display and underneath it a full QWERTY keyboard. The handset supports 3G and WiFi networks and GPS. Other characteristics include a large 400MB storage, a memory card slot and a 3.2MP camera. Xperia X1 will be available in the third quarter 2008 with two colors to choose from: Solid Black and Steel Silver. Z770 and W980 are two intelligent clamshells that were recently presented under the Sony Ericsson brand. Both are specifically oriented devices, one for people who demand connectivity for their business and respectively – one for music lovers. SE Z770 supports 3G networks and lets you use it as a modem by connecting it via the USB cable to your laptop. The phone was also designed to interact to multiple in-car accessories, among which is the HCB-150 device that uses Google maps to guide you to a certain destination by announcing you verbally which direction to take next. To help you organize things on the go, the phone has also an e-mail client and the ability to access popular web-based mail services like Yahoo and Hotmail. The handset will be available in the second quarter 2008 in three colors: Vogue Red, Graphite Black and Exquisite Gold. SE W980 is a proud representative of the Walkman series. It has a lot of great surprises you wouldn’t ever expect from a clamshell and that makes it even more appealing.   It’s a big update for the Sony Ericsson portfolio. The company announced the launch of several new mobile phones.   SE G700 and G900 are among those new devices. Both phones are based on the touch screen concept and therefore are equipped with a 2.4” display. They will also feature the touch-screen text input that allows you to directly write with a stylus on the large display as you’d do on a regular piece of paper. The G700 model is designed to take the organizer option to a new level. Therefore you are allowed to make notes and draw directly on the large display, and then save the To do list on the home-screen.  To make the use of the touch screen more comfortable and to skip the menu navigation, the phone is equipped with dedicated keys for messaging and notes.   Apple announced a new version of its popular iPhone and iPod that now have doubled the memory storage. For the new iPhone a total of 16GB comes at a price neither more, nor less then $499. The iPod touch boasts 32GB and it is on sale for the same price. An upgrade in the company’s collection is commented to be a need as the demand for larger storage is boosting. Both models are already available at Apple’s on-line store.

  Some rumors are spreading arround that Motorola is dumping its Mobile unit, after it was speculated that it was affected by record losses. This effect may be a consequence of an inefficient management and a poor strategy, because Motorola seems to be preparing a fixed car phone. On the FFC (The Federal Communications Commission) website, a report was found that confirms and approves the new device - M990 Smart Rider. The phone is supposed to be a quadband and to have a complex support for high speed data transfer. As long as the phone is meant to be used in-car, the phone will feature GPS options. In addition to connectivity utilities the phone will also be an entertainer.

LG Electronics announced that the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona will also anticipate the launch of a new slider phone – KF510. The phone is in the same category as the slimmest mobile phones and is only 10.9 mm thick. The keyboard confirms once again the vision of the manufacturer which focuses on the touch sensitive mechanisms. The phone will feature the support for the most popular media files and will be equipped with a 3MP camera. The phone will be available once it will be official presented at the Congress exposition in two colors: Stardust Dark Gray or Sunset Red.

  It’s been now for a while since we’ve heard anything from Philips and its relations with the European market. Many things have changed since then, and, yes, the company has experienced some serious transitions. Now the company has decided to take a chance and get back the Philips brand to the Europe.
