Finally is has become clear why Palm company was so silent during recent several months – they were busy with a new mobile device and platform for it called Palm® webOS™. Thinking about all those cell phone announcements in the second half of 2008 you may come to a conclusion that Palm postponed the announcement deliberately, i.e. the company wanted everybody to completely satisfy curiosity regarding such new mobile devices, as iPhone 3G, Google Phone, Sony Ericsson Xperia and BlackBerry Bold. The Palm Pre smartphone features EVDO Rev. A/UMTS HSDPA, a 3.1” touchscreen (320×480), slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3MP camera with LED flash and Gesture area control.             Sony Ericsson C510 and Sony Ericsson W508   Sony Ericsson announced two cell phones at CES 2009 – Cybershot 510 and Sony Ericsson W509

Sony Ericsson W980i Review
2008-12-11 00:00:00

One of the most popular Sony Ericsson series between music funs is the Walkman series. If we shall access the official site of the manufacturer and browse the phones under the “music phones” criteria, then Sony Ericsson W980i automatically moves to the head of the list. Yes, indeed, the W980i model is the last addition of this segment and represents the flagship of the Walkman series. Sony Ericsson has come with some nice surprises, which are unexpected and uncharacteristic for the manufacturer till now, but which seems to become traditional hence further. Some of these surprises are the built in 8Gb memory, FM transmitter, visual effects and others – things that suit very well a musical phone. Of course, all the other usual Walkman features as SensMe, TrackID, Shake Control and the Walkman 3.0 player are present and they fulfill the musical side of this phone. Well, it seems that is not only us who have appreciated the phone’s features – Sony Ericsson W980i had been nominated the best music phone of the 2008 by EISA. Let’s see why it deserves this title. Sony Ericsson has decided to execute this model in a clamshell form factor, which was at first released only in Piano Black color. For the start, nothing unusual,

Sony Commercializes World's First 12.25 Megapixel Sensor for Mobile Phones
2008-11-14 00:00:00

Sony today announced the commercialization of IMX060PQ, a new type 1/2.5 CMOS image sensor Exmor, for use in camera enabled mobile phones that features an effective resolution of 12.25 megapixel. IMX060PQ is designed to meet the need for advanced image quality within mobile phone enabled cameras. Sony also announced the launch of IMX046PQ, a type 1/3.2 CMOS image sensor Exmor with 8.11 effective megapixel resolution, and IMX045PQ, a type 1/4 Exmor CMOS image sensor featuring 5.15 effective megapixel resolution. Furthermore, Sony will also commercialize IU060F, a type 1/3.2 lens module with 12.25 effective megapixel resolution, and IU046F, a type 1/3.2 lens module with 8.11 effective megapixels. Equipped with lens and auto focus functions, the two modules are the industry's smallest and thinnest in their class. Camera phones and other small-pixel consumer imaging devices often suffer from poor performance, especially under low light conditions and therefore we really don’t need a smaller, better, larger and more sensitive sensors for cellphones supported with a better optic and that is the only way to get the image quality that can be equal or even surpass what is available from current classic point and shoot cameras!   In the area of mobile communications, innovative technologies such as "HSPA evolution," which is the successor to HSPA, and "LTE (long term evolution)," which features high-speed communications of more than 100Mbps, are drawing interest. For both of these technologies, Ericsson intends to proactively develop and market embedded modules, base station facilities and other products. During the conference, Ericsson mentioned its concept of a future mobile terminal as "a mobile device in 2012." According to the concept, high-function terminals, in the future, will be equipped with a 12- to 20-Mpixel camera and support full HD video shooting capability. "We have an image of a mobile terminal equipped with digital camera and camcorder capabilities of the future," said Jonas Lundstedt, Ericsson's Director Portfolio Management, Product and Portfolio Management. The terminal's display will have XGA resolution. And the operating frequency of the application processor will reach 1GHz, he said. As for its telecommunications functionality, Ericsson expects the device to support 100Mbps or faster LTE. The company considers that the market shift toward such a future mobile terminal is gradual. Current HSPA technology has a maximum transmission speed of 7.2Mbps,

Mobile Phone Helpdesk already wrote an article about the announcement Sony Ericsson will make tomorrow. In this message we reported about a new flagship modern that will get its official twist tomorrow, but we actually didn't think of the Sony Ericsson Rika. Not because the Sony Ericsson Rika, aka W705, is not special, but more because we had expected some more spectacular specifications. But well, that may not spoil the fun for tomorrow. A couple of official photos, of an early developing stadium of the devices, and a couple of official specifications ended up in our mailbox this morning. The Sony Ericsson W705 is already warming up for tomorrow. The website Cellphone Sail today published the first pictures of the Sony Ericsson W705. A juicy detail of the Sony Ericsson W705 is that it will become the first Walkman Phone with a 3.5 mm audio port. It will finally be possible to connect your own headphone to a true Walkman Phone! The newest Walkman Player software will be present to give your beats and bass a good view and userfriendliness and the same clear speakers as used in the Sony Ericsson W980 will be present. Information about the amount of internal memory is something we don't have yet, but we can say that Sony Ericsson delivers a 4 GB

E-Ink Phone Concept: Simple White Email
2008-10-20 00:00:00

These days, anyone with Photoshop and a fanboy bent can come up with fake (or, as they are known, "concept") product design. To achieve smart, desirable simplicity, though, requires some talent. Mac Funamizu has it, as we saw with his transparent tablet computer, which overlays the internet on the real world. Now he has theoretically embedded e-ink into simple plastic block to make a smart phone. Based on the Nokia Aeon (another concept), the Nanokia has no buttons. The interface is configured on-the-fly, like the iPhone, but the e-ink makes you forget thare is a screen involved. The planned haptic interface furthers the illusion of real, solid buttons. I love it. Especially the slide-out-screen configuration. It's one step closer to something that was already perfected 11 years ago.

Sony Ericsson reports third quarter results
2008-10-17 00:00:00

Q3 highlights: Break even results, excluding restructuring charges, as challenging business conditions continued C902 Cyber-shot™ camera phone is hit model of the quarter First Xperia™ branded multimedia phone X1 began shipping   Expansion of music service offering with announcement of PlayNow™ plus   Units shipped in the quarter were 25.7 million, a sequential increase but flat year-on-year, while sales for the quarter were Euro 2,808 million, a decrease of 10% compared to the third quarter of 2007. Most of this decrease reflects the impact of exchange rate fluctuations, as well as a shift of the product mix to more lower priced phones. Gross margin also decreased year-on-year and sequentially due to continued price pressure at a time of adverse cost trends in the supplier base. This was partially mitigated by the introduction of new products at the end of the second quarter, such as the C902 Cyber-shot™ camera phone, which is selling well; however, strong competition continues, particularly in Europe. Income before taxes for the quarter was Euro 12 million, excluding restructuring charges of Euro 35 million, a decrease compared to the third quarter of 2007. Average selling price (ASP)

Sony Ericsson W305 Yao cell phone in March 2009
2008-10-16 00:00:00

Are they running out of new designs in the Sony Ericsson’s lab or are they just porting over cell phones with a few changes from different segments? After the Rika, we have news about yet another cellphone that’s going for the Walkman branding, the F305 gaming phone, which will become the W305 when it is released next year in March. Going by the code name of “Yao” (F305 was called Ying), the W305 will sport pretty much the same features as the F305 before it was Walkmanized, dropping the gaming keys on top for the Walkman button, a 2-megapixel camera, a 176×220 display, and most probably EDGE support, making this another low-ender in the Walkman category. More details as we find them!
