Today we are going to make a brief review of several cell phones announced at CES 2009. They are Palm Pre, Sony Ericsson C510, Sony Ericsson W508, Motorola Tundra Va76r, MOTO W233 Renew, Motosurf A3100, HTC S743, Nokia 7510 and Nokia E63.
Palm Pre
The Palm Pre smartphone presentation seemed to be the most interesting one. Finally is has become clear why Palm company was so silent during recent several months – they were busy with a new mobile device and platform for it called Palm® webOS™. Thinking about all those cell phone announcements in the second half of 2008 you may come to a conclusion that Palm postponed the announcement deliberately, i.e. the company wanted everybody to completely satisfy curiosity regarding such new mobile devices, as iPhone 3G, Google Phone, Sony Ericsson Xperia and BlackBerry Bold. The Palm Pre smartphone features EVDO Rev. A/UMTS HSDPA, a 3.1” touchscreen (320×480), slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3MP camera with LED flash and Gesture area control.
Sony Ericsson C510 and Sony Ericsson W508
Sony Ericsson announced two cell phones at CES 2009 – Cybershot 510 and Sony Ericsson W509 Walkman. Both phones have features that mark them out among other SE series cell phones.
Sony Ericsson C510 is equipped with a 3.2MP camera with functions so far present only in middle-range digital cameras but not in cell phones. We think that Smile Shutter function deserves special attention – the camera captures a smile and takes a photo immediately.
Let’s talk a little about the second Sony Ericsson cell phone W508 Walkman. Here we should mention Shake and Gesture Control, SenseMe and TrackID. Shake and Gesture Control gives you the opportunity to control the device by wrist movements – you can change volume, turn on/off Shuffle mode in the player, turn off alarm, etc. The cell phone is equipped with a 3.2 MP camera and supports HSDPA. A M2 1GB memory card and a changeable cover is included in the package. As for the cover, it will be very useful for those who get bored of a cell phone very quickly and want to change it somehow.
Motorola Tundra Va76r, MOTO W233 Renew and Motosurf A3100
Motorola surprised everybody by announcing three cell phones at once several days before CES 2009. These are Tundra Va76r, MOTO W233 Renew and a smartphone with a very meaningful name MOTOSURF A3100.
MOTO W233 is definitely unique in terms of materials it is made of. This is the world’s first cell phone from plastics comprised of recycled water bottles. Well, even cell phone manufacturers are able to contribute to environmental protection. As for the package and printed materials, they are also recycled paper products.
The MOTOSURF A3100 smartphone works under Windows Mobile operating system, is equipped with a touchscreen, unidirectional trackball and stylus attached to the side of the phone. The MOTOSURF A3100 supports microSD memory cards up to 32Гб. Awesome.
Motorola Tundra Va76r is a ruggedized clamshell cell phone able to withstand harsh environmental conditions and rough handling. The cell phone has a 2 MP camera, supports 3G push-to-talk and microSD memory cards up to 16GB. Motorola Tundra Va76r will be distributed through AT&T mobile network operator.
HTC S743
Soon after G1 successful launch HTC company becomes a respectable CES 2009 participant by announcing the S743 cell phone. The phone has two keyboards – a common keypad and a full QWERTY one. The faceted design of S743 resembles that of HTC Touch Diamond. The new cell phone supports HSDPA (850/1900 Mhz) and is reasonably small so as to lie in your palm properly.
Nokia 7510 and Nokia E63
We have already heard of Nokia 7510, known as Supernova, and the Nokia E63 smartphone.
The company has decided to drop the name Supernova and calls the smartphone simply Nokia 7510. The phone has changeable covers like Sony Ericsson W508 and there are three of them: fatal red, espresso brown, and emerald green. Nokia 7510 is equipped with a 2 MP camera and a very interesting external display – you cannot see it when it is turned off and it seems that there is no external display at all. The cell phone will be distributed through T-Mobile.
As for Nokia E63, this smartphone will be distributed in the USA and won’t be under any mobile carrier. Nokia E63 has a full QWERTY keyboard, four dedicated keys (home, calendar, contacts, и email), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, 3,5 mm. jack and a very attractive price tag.
