2009-05-21 00:00:00

The Global Positioning System (GPS) essential to U.S. national security has become a popular tool for public services worldwide providing navigation, position and timing data. Alarming news is that the Air Force responsible for GPS is uncertain about acquiring new satellites to avoid interruptions of GPS services. The Global Positioning System will partly lose its capability in 2010 if the Air Force does not manage to develop GPS IIIA satellites in time as far as old satellites begin to fail. However, there are certain measures that can be taken to minimize the impact on GPS users. In recent years, the Air Force faced technical problems still threatening the system accuracy. Besides, stability of GPS has been hampered because of the frequent turnover in program managers and the lack of a single authority for space programs.

Motorola announced that it would deploy Motorola Mobile Advanced Location System (MALS) for the largest Japanese NTT DOCOMO mobile network operator to power its location based services (LBS). Motorola’s system will give NTT DOCOMO the opportunity to become more competitive in the worldwide roaming market and enhance media mobility experience because MALS innovative end-to-end location based solution complies with all standards and meets the requirements of the next generation of LBS. For instance, DOCOMO’s users with mobile phones supporting SUPL can use such services as store locations and digital maps while traveling abroad. Mobile Advances Location System detects the user’s location on the basis of reference positions obtained from GPS satellites and mobile networks. MALS is supported by GMLC (the Gateway Mobile Location Center), which improves accuracy of A-GPS compared to the conventional standalone GPS. MALS has been successfully tested and proven to deliver excellent performance. Source: GSMPress ® in cooperation with Motorola
