  The Global Positioning System (GPS) essential to U.S. national security has become a popular tool for public services worldwide providing navigation, position and timing data. Alarming news is that the Air Force responsible for GPS is uncertain about acquiring new satellites to avoid interruptions of GPS services. The Global Positioning System will partly lose its capability in 2010 if the Air Force does not manage to develop GPS IIIA satellites in time as far as old satellites begin to fail. However, there are certain measures that can be taken to minimize the impact on GPS users. In recent years, the Air Force faced technical problems still threatening the system accuracy. Besides, stability of GPS has been hampered because of the frequent turnover in program managers and the lack of a single authority for space programs.  

  Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) reports that 26 mobile network operators are eager to develop 4G mobile networks based on LTE technology. The severe competition can be explained by the fact that the world's first LTE operator will be able to expand its range of services drastically and attract a huge number of subscribers. LTE is a technology of building mobile networks, a derivative from 2, 2.5 and 3G, based on IP technologies. Ten mobile network operators have the year 2010 marked as 4G network launch time. In the USA they are Verizon, MetroPCS, and CenturyTel; in Sweden and Norway – TeliaSonera. In Japan LTE 4G network is to be launched by NTT DoCoMo and KDDI; in Canada – by Rogers Wireless, Telus, and Bell Canada. Sixteen more operators are planning to launch LTE 4G after 2010. One of the factors that make it impossible to launch LTE 4G immediately is the lack of mobile devices supporting this standard.   Dr Martin Sonnenschein of consultants A.T. Kearney estimates that the 3 billion GSM / UMTS subscribers in the world consume between 0.5% and 0.55% of the world’s electricity needs, just in using their phones! He’s worked out that this is about the output of 10 average European nuclear power plants. Martin comments “the ensuing CO2 output amounts to 36-40 million tons and is equivalent to the exhaust produced by approximately 20 million compact cars.” So, for the first time as part of its 14th annual awards, the GSM Association –the world’s more than 750 GSM mobile phone networks in 218 countries – is including an award for “Green” initiatives.   Ericsson and TeliaSonera companies today announced that they have signed an agreement, according to which Ericsson will build a 4G network covering Sweden’s capital Stockholm. It will be the first experience for Ericssson in building a commercial LTE network.
