At the Division of Neurosurgery at Lund University in Sweden an experiment on rats has been carried out. Rats exposed to cell phone radiation for more than a year turned out to have poorer results on a memory test than those that had not been exposed to it. The experiment supervisor thinks that cell phone radiation affects the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from substances in blood that are dangerous to nerve cells. It was previously discovered that a protein albumin leaks into brain tissue while the latter is exposed to radiation, and nerve cells become damaged in 4-8 weeks. Two types of nerve cells suffer: those in the cerebral cortex and the memory center of the brain. Within the experiment alterations in the activity of a large number of genes belonging to functionally related groups have also been found.

Land Rover and Sonim have signed an agreement to launch co-branded mobile phones. At present 3 phones are already being developed together with Scott Wilson, a designer. Two phones and namely the Land Rover S1 and Land Rover S2 G4 are planned to start shipping in the first half of 2009, and the third one later in the year. All the phones will be able to withstand a 1.6-meter drop, salt, humidity, and high temperatures.

A team of Texas researchers have discovered a way to produce energy from energy resulting from vibration. It turns out that electrical energy can be obtained if a certain type of piezoelectric material about 21 nanometers thick is exposed even to vibration of voice. It is interesting that 21 nanometers seem to be the best value from the 20-23 nanometer range, within which electrical energy can be produced. Usage of nanotechnologies regarding piezoelectric materials may result in the appearance of self-powered devices including phones, which will not have any replaceable power supplies.

The body of the Samsung S9402 Ego is made by a liquid metal alloy developed by the California Institute of Technology that is 3 times stronger than titanium. Compared with other metals used for body of expensive phones, the new alloy has 3 times better vibration absorption and 100% lower thermal conductivity. Russian market will be the first one to get the Samsung S9402. The phone is expected to start shipping this month at an estimated price of 1400 euro.

Launched alongside The Museum of Modern Art “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition, the Morph concept device is a bridge between highly advanced technologies and their potential benefits to end-users. This device concept showcases some revolutionary leaps being explored by Nokia Research Center (NRC) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom) – nanoscale technologies that will potentially create a world of radically different devices that open up an entirely new spectrum of possibilities. Morph concept technologies might create fantastic opportunities for mobile devices: * Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials blend more seamlessly with the way we live * Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving * Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension * Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, whilst batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge * Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices In addition to the advances above, the integrated electronics shown in the Morph concept could cost less and include more functionality in a much smaller space, even as interfaces are...

Well, it got its first airing last month, but today LG has officially launched second-generation Prada Phone (aka Prada II) in Europe. If you loved the ultra-stylish minimalist looks of the first phone, chances are you'll be sold on this too. Indeed, even with the addition of the slide-out keyboard, it's still slimmer than a supermodel's sandwich. But there's more to this upgrade than a few cosmetic touches. In comes a new touch control screen with haptic feedback, HSDPA connectivity and a 5MP camera with slow motion video recording, rubbing shoulders with Wi-Fi connectivity, a full HTML browser and video calling. And that's not all. If you really want to splash the cash, check out the matching Prada Link watch, a Bluetooth timepiece that can monitor your calls and show your text messages without having to check your phone. And if none are incoming, just use it as a high-end digital watch. Trust us, it's what all the beautiful people will be wearing this Christmas. We're still awaiting network details, expect those in the coming days.

Sciphone’s half-baked Dream G2 from China - Land of the useless Android smartphone

Why is it that handsets from little-known Chinese manufacturers always claim to feature ground-breaking technologies but come wrapped in low-end plastics and half-baked ideas. The latest Chinese smartphone to hit the intertubes is the Sciphone Dream G2. Powered by the same Android OS that made a splash on the T-Mobile G1 (wherever did Sciphone get the idea for “Dream G2?”), the Sciphone Dream G2 promises to bring the world’s second Android smartphone to market on November 28. The Dream G2 promises to sport a 2.8-inch 320×240 touchscreen, 4 megapixel camera, EDGE (keep dreaming about that 3G connection), WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP, and FM radio. Unfortunately for the “engineers” at Sciphone, the Dream G2 doesn’t sport a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The Android OS doesn’t support any on-screen, virtual keyboards, which should make for some fun times when you’re trying to input text numbers anything on your Dream G2. Another half-baked smartphone from China? How surprising.
