The dispute between the mobile phone giant - Nokia and the chip manufacturer Qualcomm resulted into a request, made by the Finnish company, to the US International Trade Commission. The petition consists in the imminent need to ban the USA import of Qualcomm’s chipset and some of other phones, which are based on those types of chipsets. Nokia engaged such actions because of some patent infringements that were discovered after a closer investigation of Qualcomm products. The present legal issue may be a response to an older legal action regarding patents, started by Qualcomm against Nokia, last year. Although the chipset manufacturer, had already canceled the complaint regarding three of the mentioned patents. The other three may not be taken seriously too, a Nokia representative said. The existing legal issue will have as a result a revised version of the agreement between those two companies, with more benefits for somebody and less legal advantages for the other party. But this is not the first incident for Qualcomm. A similar petition was presented to the US International Trade Commission by Broadcom. As a result the Qualcomm related phones were banned for import and approximately $40 billion were received by Broadcom as compensation for business damages. Thus the company wants to completely ban the manufacturing of CDMA chipsets by Qualcomm.
